LETS (Local Exchange Trading System)

A community-based exchange system originated by Michael Linton in 1983 in British Columbia where members negotiate their own rates in local credit units. Unlike strict time banks, most LETS allow market-based pricing. Research shows only 13% of UK LETS practiced strict hour-for-hour equivalence. LETS credits cannot be converted to national currency, and balances are publicly visible to promote trust.
